✧Theme: Fresh Starts
As the team collaborated various ideas to set our story, creating a platformer was ambitious in its time frame and I quickly set my sights on establishing the setting and building our character. We knew we wanted to present a world beyond a catastrophic event, and have a character the players would connect with. |
Undertale, Stardew Valley, Pokémon and Steven Universe were inspirations for shape language and colors.
✧ Our Protagonist: Juniper to the Rescue!
Not only did we want to create a female lead, but we wanted to make her a product of her time (how severe the post-apocalyptic event had reset the environment) and be able to traverse through various locations with ease. She would have to transport the potato plant safely and in a controlled environment, thus a backpack was sufficient enough. |
With a mix of Sprite 1D and Sprite 2C, Juniper quickly evolved to a character that could still venture safely through the world, but be quick and decisive when running and jumping through her environments.
Simplifying her design was essential to have her be read quickly, and still be enough for creative and swift animation. |
✧ Support Systems:
Meemaw and Maeve Due to time constraints, it was difficult to solidify Juniper’s relationships, but it was essential for us as a group to showcase characters of different backgrounds. Meemaw is an inventor who is confined in a wheelchair, and has knowledge of how the world used to be before its eradicated event. Maeve is a scholar who guards and studies the seed-bank, and gives a variety of trivia questions about the plants Juniper has collected before letting her in. |
Day of Juniper
was made by a dedicated team that pushed its boundaries, and strived to deliver a story that is both a warning and an encouragement about the effects of climate change, and what we as the human race are responsible for. We thank you for playing our game, and hope it remains with you in some way, shape or form. -Jam Jar Team 🌱 |
